Social Networks - Daniela Fernández

Social networks are sites on internet where people or users can create a profile; they can communicate with friends and unknown people. In these sites users can share information and a good example of that are:  photos, images and thoughts. So, do you believe that social networks are good for our society? According to a website “the 47% of American adults used social networking sites like Facebook, My Space, Twitter, Linked and Classmates.com”. I think that people waste their valuable time doing things that are not necessary, they prefer their electronic devices instead of spending time with their family; but, why do people still think that social networks are so good?
There are a lot of information about social networks, and people that even these days think that social networks just have a “good” side, can look for information in order to understand that these sites do not are a wonderful thing like they imagine. Social networks have too many things that can help us; but, they have the other side that can damage our life style and it is difficult for us to notice the harm after all the disaster we can have been suffering in that moment. It is important to forget about the idea of spending too much time on social networks sites.
Now, I want to let you know some benefits of these new sites of “communication”. A good example of the pros of social networks are: you can see and share photos or memories with your relatives and friends in  few minutes, faster than any other media (newspaper, TV, Radio), almost on a real time and you can have important news about what is happening in any other place of the World. Also students have access to the facilities of these sites in order to help on their major. Finally, you can have the opportunity to “meet” different variety of people, so you can have multicultural ideas and maybe you can be interested in learning another language.
Some of the damages for every single user even if you think it won´t happened to you; so, you have to be careful. Sometimes the information comes from unreliable sources, and some of that information maybe is  fake and lack of fundaments. Information passes from mouth to mouth and it can take a wrong way at the moment we receive the message. Also, social networks prevent face to face communication and you can be a victim of a serious fraud.
We need to understand that we are giving a lot of information to unknown people or a group that we even know. For example, when we open a Facebook account, we agree all the terms and conditions on a “contract” that gives the rights to Facebook Company of selling our personal information. Now a days, the Facebook´s CEO (the head of the company) says that he is not going to sell our information, but, what would happen in the future when the CEO passes away and the new owner decides to sell it?. It won´t be a good idea, so we have to be careful what we are sharing on internet.
